*So … caveats: These rankings represent the sums of entries in the Sioux Falls Police Department’s animal control database — i.e., licenses granted — not necessarily individual animals. That’s because SFPD provided only the name and breed fields, which means there are no unique identifiers for each animal, even owner information, that would allow someone perusing the data to infer whether the beagle named Lucy that was licensed in 2008 is the same Lucy that was licensed in 2012. For this reason, I ran the totals on mixed breeds based on whatever breed was listed first. A “chihuahua/dachshund mix” went with the chihuahuas; a “dachshund/chihuahua mix” went with the dachshunds.
